WIESBADEN – The core and extra budgets of the overall public budget as defined in public finance statistics recorded a financial surplus of 45.2 billion euros in 2019. This means that for the sixth year in a row the financial balance was positive. According to provisional results of quarterly cash statistics, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the cash surplus declined by 8.5 billion euros on a year earlier (2018: 53.6 billion euros). The expenditure of the overall public budget rose by 4.8% in 2019 to 1,497.4 billion euros compared with 2018. Revenue increased by 4.1% to 1,542.7 billion euros.
