WIESBADEN – In February 2020, roughly 15.1 million passengers embarked or disembarked at the major German airports. This was a decrease of 3.6% compared with the same month a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that not only air transport to and from the regions that were initially most affected by the new coronavirus but also national transport declined significantly. The number of passengers on flights to the People's Republic of China (including Hong Kong) fell by 68.8% to 32,000 passengers compared with the same month a year earlier. 31,000 air passengers travelled in the opposite direction, which was a decrease of 66.3%. The number of passengers embarking on domestic flights dropped by 15.1% to 1.5 million from February 2019. This decrease was even more pronounced than in January 2020 (–9.0% on January 2019).
