Press release No. 136 of 17 April 2020
WIESBADEN – In January 2020, German local courts registered 1,609 business insolvencies. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), that was a decline of 5.4% compared with January 2019. Although the number of business insolvency requests went down, the prospective debts owed to creditors (4.0 billion euros) were markedly higher than a year earlier: in January 2019 they had totalled 1.2 billion euros. Prospective debts increased despite the smaller number of business insolvencies registered because more economically important businesses filed business insolvency requests in January 2020 than in the same month of 2019.
