WIESBADEN – In December 2019, roughly 1,085,000 people in Germany received basic security benefits in old age and in cases of reduced earning capacity in accordance with the German Social Code, Book XII (SGB XII). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was an increase of almost 7,000, or 0.6%, on December 2018. Adults who are permanently unfit for work or who have reached the age limit described in Section 41 (2) of the Social Code, Book XII, and whose income and assets do not suffice to cover their living expenses are entitled to these benefits.
