Press Disinfectants: strong increase of foreign demand in January 2020

  • Germany is a net exporter of disinfectants with an export surplus of 58,680 tonnes in 2019

WIESBADEN – Disinfectants are in short supply these days. Hospitals, physicians’ practices and care facilities report bottlenecks in the delivery of these products which are urgently needed in the coronavirus pandemic. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), a total of 76,870 tonnes of disinfectants to the value of 212.5 million euros were imported to Germany in 2019, while 135,560 tonnes worth 353.3 million euros were exported to other countries.Foreign demand surged in January 2020: at 12,360 tonnes, exports of disinfectants were almost 20% above the relevant average for a January in the past five years. Imports, in contrast, were a good 9% lower than in the five years before (4,860 tonnes).
