WIESBADEN – As at the reference date of 30 June 2018, approximately 4.8 million people were employed in the public service. That was an increase of 1.3%, or 63,000, compared with a year earlier. To mark Labour Day on 1 May 2020, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the latest increase in the number of employed people was mainly due to the expansion of child day care.
Public service is the biggest employer in Germany
According to the employment accounts, an average of 44.85 million people were in employment in Germany in 2018. The 4.8 million people employed in the public service as at 30 June 2018 accounted for just under 11% of that total. The public service is therefore the biggest employer in Germany.
