Turnover in accommodation and food service activities, March 2020

WIESBADEN – The coronavirus pandemic had a substantial impact on accommodation and food service activities in Germany in March 2020. As from 18 March, overnight stays of tourists in hotels and other accommodation establishments were forbidden. As from 22 March, restaurants were closed, with the exception of takeaway and delivery services. Due to these measures, all branches of accommodation and food service activities saw the largest losses in turnover since the beginning of the time series in 1994. In real terms (price adjusted), turnover in accommodation and food services fell by 45.4% in March 2020 compared with March 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the nominal turnover in accommodation and food services (not price adjusted) was 44.0% lower than in the same month a year earlier. Compared with February 2020, the calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation and food services declined by a real 44.6% and a nominal 44.5% in March 2020.
The turnover reported by the hotels and other accommodation establishments in March 2020 was 51.0% (real) and 50.0% (nominal) lower than in March 2019. In food and beverage services, turnover fell by a real 42.4% in March 2020 compared with March 2019. Within food and beverage service activities, the real turnover of caterers in March 2020 was by 28.8% lower than in the same month of the previous year.
