Press release No. 197 of 3 June 2020
WIESBADEN – In 2019, roughly 128,900 foreigners obtained the German citizenship. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of naturalisations was up by 16,600, or 15%, on the previous year, reaching the highest level since 2003. Almost half of the increase (+8,000) is due to growing numbers of Britons being naturalised. The numbers of naturalisations from Great Britain have been up already since 2016, the year of the Brexit referendum. In 2019, the number of naturalisations was highest. In 2019, more Britons were naturalised (14,600) than in the preceding two years together (2018: 6,600 and 2017: 7,500). In 2015, that is, before the referendum, roughly 600 Britons were naturalised.
