Press Number of road traffic accidents down 35% in April 2020 year on year

Number of fatalities nearly unchanged

Press release No. 221 of 19 June 2020

WIESBADEN – In April 2020, 236 people died in road traffic accidents in Germany. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decline of three people compared with April 2019.
Unlike in March, the very low traffic volume caused by the coronavirus pandemic was hardly reflected by the number of people who died in traffic accidents. However, the total of road traffic accidents in April declined by 35% to 144,500. This was the lowest level in a month of April since German reunification. The number of persons injured was also markedly down by 33% to roughly 21,000 compared with the same month a year earlier. In March 2020, both the total of traffic accidents and the number of fatalities had been much lower than a year earlier.
