Press Fewer births, deaths and marriages in 2019

WIESBADEN – 778,100 babies were born in Germany in 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that their number was down by roughly 9,400 on a year earlier. When the number of births is related to the number of inhabitants, the result is 9.4 newborns per 1,000 inhabitants. In the previous year, the relation was somewhat higher at 9.5 children per 1,000 inhabitants.

Births and deaths compared across the EU
The number of births in Germany was slightly below, that of deaths slightly above the EU average in 2019. At a crude birth rate of 9.4 births per 1,000 inhabitants, Germany had slightly fewer births than the EU average (9.5). Deaths in the EU Member States averaged at 10.2 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants, in Germany the figure was 11.3. The number of deaths was highest in Bulgaria (15.5) and lowest in Ireland (6.3). The data can be retrieved from the Eurostat database.
