Press release No. 273 of 20 July 2020
WIESBADEN – Asparagus yields will presumably be 19% lower this year than in 2019. According to a provisional estimate of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), asparagus yields amounted to approximately 106,400 tonnes in all of Germany. In the last six years, the average amount of asparagus harvested annually was 123,700 tonnes. This year’s quantity is 14% lower than this average. The decline may be due also to the fact that there were not enough seasonal farm workers from abroad in some regions because of the coronavirus pandemic so that not all asparagus could be harvested.
At 99,000 tonnes, the quantities of outdoor strawberries harvested will presumably be 13% lower than in 2019. Compared with the average of the last six years, which is 132,800 tonnes, the estimated decline is well above 25%.
