WIESBADEN – A total of 1.839 million people seeking protection were registered in the Central Register of Foreigners (AZR) on 31 December 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of people seeking protection who were registered in the AZR rose by 57,000 (+3%) on the previous year. This is the lowest increase since 2012. People seeking protection are foreigners who, referring to international law, humanitarian or political reasons, are staying in Germany, according to AZR information.
