WIESBADEN – Following a number of coronavirus outbreaks, the German meat industry has become a focus of public attention. In 2019, there were 563 local units with 50 or more persons employed in the slaughtering and meat processing industries, which generated turnover of roughly 39.7 billion euros. That was an increase of 7.9% compared with the previous year. In 2018, the relevant figure was 36.8 billion euros. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this trend has continued in 2020. From January to April 2020, turnover increased by 14.8% to 14.2 billion euros compared with the same period a year earlier (January to April 2019: 12.3 billion euros). In March 2020, turnover in this branch reached a record high of 3.9 billion euros. That was the highest monthly value since the survey began.
