Press Teachers at schools of general education: more than a third were 50 or over in 2018/19

Press release No. N 034 of 3 July 2020

WIESBADEN – According to plans of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, schools all over Germany should return to regular lessons after the summer holidays. However, the more teachers fall into high-risk groups, the more staff will be lacking to catch up on missed lessons. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 259,000 teachers of the total of just under 686,000 teachers who taught at schools of general education in school year 2018/19 were aged 50 years or over.

That age group accounted for approximately 38% of the total. About one in eight teachers in Germany were 60 or over and one in four teachers were aged 50 to under 60 years.
