Press EU retail trade turnover in June at the pre-crisis level of February 2020

WIESBADEN – Retail trade turnover in the European Union continued to grow in June 2020. According to estimates from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union, the cal-endar and seasonally adjusted month-on-month increase was 5.2% in real terms (price adjusted). In May 2020, the retail trade volume increased by 18.3% compared with the previous month. Thus turnover returned to the level recorded in February 2020, before the start of the coronavirus crisis. In March (-9.6%) and April (-11.3%) retail trade suffered massive month-on-month losses in turnover as shops remained temporarily closed.

Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the retail trade turnover in Germany was down 1.6% in real terms (calendar and seasonally adjusted) in June 2020 month on month. In May, after the relaxation of restrictions, turnover had started to grow again considerably (+12.7%). Austria also saw a decline in turnover in June 2020 (-2.5%).

Results on retail trade in other EU countries are contained in the Eurostat’s database. At the moment the database includes data for almost all countries for Mai 2020. Furthermore, a press release on the turnover of the retail trade in an EU comparison is planned for 7 August 2020.
