WIESBADEN – The risk of poverty – measured by the at-risk-of-poverty rate – was up in the period from 2009 to 2019 in all western Länder and in Berlin. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the proportion of people at risk of poverty increased most strongly in Bremen. There, almost a quarter (24.9%) of the population were at risk of poverty in 2019, that is more than in any other Land. In 2009, the proportion of people at risk of poverty in Bremen had been just over a fifth (20.1%). The risk of income poverty rose rather strongly since 2009 also in Hessen (2019: 16.1%, 2009: 12.4%) and Nordrhein-Westfalen (2019: 18.5%, 2009: 15.2%). The at-risk-of-poverty rate is an indicator measuring the relative income poverty.
