Press release No. N 047 of 10 August 2020
- First relevant evaluation of data from wage and income tax statistics
- Increasing popularity: roughly 2,600 new private schools, including nearly 700 primary schools, established since 1992/1993
- Significant regional differences in school fees
WIESBADEN - Schools in Germany, including private schools, are to return to ‘normal service’ after the summer holidays. During school closures owing to the coronavirus pandemic, parents of pupils at private schools had to continue to pay school fees in most cases. These fees are an integral part of schooling agreements and a major element of financing these schools. Based on a special evaluation of data from the wage and income tax statistics, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that parents paid an annual average of 2,000 euros for a fee-based place for their children at a private school. The annual fee for a place was lower than 1,500 euros for the majority (59%) of these children, while it was even below 500 euros for nearly a quarter (23.5%) of them.
