Number of future cooks has halved since 2010

Press release No. N 048 of 12 August 2020

WIESBADEN – Training apprentices is a real challenge for many companies in the corona crisis year. As of late, companies which do train apprentices have been able to apply for government support. Even before the crisis, there was a shortage of junior staff in many establishments. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that increasingly fewer people started apprenticeship training in the hotel and restaurant industry, tourism and retail trade in the last years. In 2019, 77,000 new apprenticeship contracts were concluded in these economic branches, which was a decrease of 28% from 2010. This figure is markedly below average: the total number of new contracts in all dual-system training occupations was 8% below the level of ten years ago.
