WIESBADEN – An increasing number of people use bicycles to travel from A to B, for environmental or health reasons or simply because it is fun. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that one in seven people killed in road traffic in 2019 was riding a bicycle. A total of 445 cyclists were killed in accidents last year, including 118 pedelec riders (electric bicycles). Compared with 2010, the number of cyclists killed increased by 16.8%. This goes against the general trend: the total number of traffic accident fatalities was 16.5% lower in 2019 than in 2010.
