Corona crisis - slight employment effects, substantial impact on hours worked and remuneration

Persons employed in manufacturing, July 2020
-2.9% on the same month a year earlier

WIESBADEN – At the end of July 2020, 5.5 million people worked in local units of manufacturing with 50 or more persons employed in Germany. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on the basis of provisional results, that was about 164,000 persons or 2.9% less than in July 2019.

The number of hours worked in July 2020 decreased 8.5% from a year earlier, reaching 671 million – at equal numbers of working days.

The earnings amounted to 23.8 billion euros; that was 8.6% less than in July 2019.

Results are available on the "Corona statistics" webpage of the Federal Statistical Office together with other indicators which can be used to assess the economic consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.
