Press Federal Statistical Office re-elected to UN Statistical Commission

Press release No. 401 of 12 October 2020

WIESBADEN – Nearly coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN), the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has been re-elected for another four-year term to the UN Statistical Commission. The Commission, which was established as early as in 1947, is the highest decision-making body of the global statistical system.

One major task of the Statistical Commission is the development of common statistical standards worldwide. This includes, for example, the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities and the System of National Accounts, which provides the basis for calculating gross domestic product.
In addition, the Statistical Commission plays an important role in monitoring progress towards the global development goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This internationally comparable system of indicators shows the progress made by individual states in achieving the global sustainability goals.
