WIESBADEN – Roughly 407,000 people were employed as academic staff at German institutions of higher education or university hospitals at the end of 2019. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was 1.1% more than at the end of 2018. The number of women was up 2.1% to 161,200 on a year earlier. The proportion of women in the academic staff at higher education institutions thus rose by one percentage point to 40%.
