Producer prices of industrial products (domestic market), September 2020

WIESBADEN – In September 2020, the index of producer prices for industrial products decreased by 1.0% compared with the corresponding month of the preceding year. In August the annual rate of change all over had been –1.2%, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Compared with the preceding month August the overall index increased by 0.4% in September 2020 (unchanged in August).
Energy prices as a whole decreased by 3.3%. On an annual basis, prices of petroleum products were down 17.9%, prices of natural gas (distribution) decreased by 8.2%.
The overall index disregarding energy was 0.2% down on September 2019.
Prices of intermediate goods decreased by 1.3% compared to September 2019. Prices decreased especially regarding secondary raw materials of paper and paperboard (-14.5%) as well as basic iron, steel and ferro-alloys (-8.3%). Paper and paperboard were down 6.5% and basic chemicals 6.0%. By contrast, prices of precious metals increased by 24.2% compared to September 2019.
Prices of non-durable consumer goods decreased by 0.1% compared to September 2019. Pork prices were down 16.3%. By contrast, the price of sugar increased by 19.6% compared to September 2019 (+4.6% compared to August 2020). Prices of coffee rose by 2.7%.
Prices of capital goods increased by 0.9% compared to September 2019, durable consumer goods by 1.4%.
