Press Ad-hoc evaluation shows mobility in coronavirus hotspots

Above-average decrease in mobility in regions with critical 7-day incidence

Press release No. 426 of 28 October 2020

WIESBADEN – As the number of COVID-19 cases is rising rapidly, many regions of Germany are crossing the critical threshold of more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within the previous seven days. An ad-hoc evaluation of experimental data by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) shows that mobility fell by 12% compared with Week 38 (14 to 20 September 2020) in the towns and districts that recorded a critical 7-day incidence in Week 43 (19 to 25 October 2020). Although factors such as the weather and tourist activity also influence the mobility of the population, mobility in less affected regions declined by a mere 6% and thus only about half as much over the same period.
