WIESBADEN – The rise of new Covid-19 infections in Germany could result in increased demand for medical in-patient care. The number of beds for intensive care in hospitals was expanded in Germany in the past decades. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this number rose by 36%, from 20,200 in 1991 to 27,500 in 2018. In the same period, total bed capacity in Germany declined. As compared to 2,411 hospitals with 666,000 beds in 1991, 498,000 beds were available in 1,925 hospitals in 2018 – that was a decrease of 25%.
