WIESBADEN – 7.1 million of the 18.8 million in-patients treated in general hospitals in Germany were operated on in 2019. That was 37.8% of the in-patients. Compared with the preceding year, the proportion did not change much (2018: 37.9%). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that 3.6 million, that is more than half of the patients who underwent surgery during their hospital stay in 2019, were aged 60 years or over. Those who were operated on several times are counted several times.
