WIESBADEN – At the beginning of the current school year 2020/2021, a total of 752,700 children started school in Germany. This was a rise of 19,300, or 2.6%, compared with a year earlier. This is a continuation of the increase in the number of school beginners which has been observed since school year 2016/2017. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of school beginners rose in all Länder. The largest percentage increases were recorded for Bremen and Niedersachsen (8.2% each) and for Schleswig-Holstein (7.1%).
