WIESBADEN – Several European countries are currently reporting increasing numbers of animals infected with the avian influenza virus (H5N8), including Germany and the Netherlands. At the end of October, the neighbouring country ordered poultry to be kept indoors. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that, in the period from January to September 2020, the largest quantities of imported live poultry, poultry meat and fresh chicken eggs were from the Netherlands. The Netherlands accounted for 28.4% and 30.8% of the total imports of live poultry and poultry meat, respectively. Nearly three quarters (73.8%) of all chicken eggs imported in the first nine months of 2020 came from the Netherlands.
