WIESBADEN – Activities outside the home have been strongly limited by the measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic. This can be particularly stressful for people living in overcrowded dwellings. In 2019, approximately 6.4 million people lived in such an overcrowded situation in Germany, 340,000 more than a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that, according to current results of the EU-SILC (LEBEN IN EUROPA) survey, the overcrowding rate of 7.8% determined for Germany for the year 2019 was still a good 9 percentage points below the relevant average figure for the EU-27 (17.1%). A dwelling is regarded as overcrowded when the number of rooms is too small for the number of people living there.
