WIESBADEN – In 2019, the German industry consumed 3,821 petajoules of energy. This was a decrease of 4.0% compared with 2018. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the major part was used for energetic purposes such as electricity and heat production (88%). The remaining 12% of the energy sources consumed by industry were used for other than than energetic purposes, for instance, for the production of chemical products, fertilisers or plastics. As in the previous years, the main energy sources in industry were natural gas (31%), electricity (22%), mineral oils and mineral oil products (16%), and coal (15%).
