WIESBADEN – The education expenditure of the Federation, Länder and municipalities increased to 150.1 billion euros in 2019. That was an increase of 8.8 billion euros, or 6.3%, compared with 2018. Schools received 73.8 billion euros, which was nearly half (49.2%) of the public education expenditure in 2019. Day care for children accounted for 33.6 billion euros (22.4%) and the higher education sector for 32.1 billion euros (21.4%). These figures were released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in the Bildungsfinanzbericht 2020 (Education Finance Report), based on provisional data of the public budgets.
