Press 4.1 million people in need of long-term care at the end of 2019

Press release No. 507 of 15 December 2020

WIESBADEN – In December 2019, 4.13 million people in Germany were in need of long-term care as defined by the Long-Term Care Insurance Act (German Social Code, Book XI). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of people in need of long-term care had amounted to 3.41 million in December 2017. The marked increase of 0.71 million people in need of long-term care (+21%) was to a large extent due to the introduction of a new and broader concept of the need for long-term care on 1 January 2017. Since that time, many more people than before have been classified as in need of long-term care.
