Press 457 kilograms of household waste per capita in 2019: 2 kilograms more than in 2018

Slight increase in biowaste led to a higher amount of waste generated by households

WIESBADEN – In 2019, a total of 38.0 million tonnes of waste were collected from households. Based on provisional figures, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was an increase of approximately 0.3 million tonnes, or 0.8%, compared with 2018. The per capita volume of household waste was up from 455 to 457 kilograms. Household waste includes residual household waste, biowaste, recyclables, bulky waste and other waste such as batteries and paints. The slight increase was almost exclusively caused by biowaste. The volume of biowaste amounted to just under 10.2 million tonnes in 2019, while it had been 9.9 million tonnes in 2018. The per capita volume was up by 2 kilograms to 122 kilograms.
