Press release No. 519 of 17 December 2020
WIESBADEN – The coronavirus pandemic considerably increases the demand for reliable high-frequency data. Apart from the national development, there is a strong interest especially in comparisons with other EU Member States. European data on the impact of the corona crisis in the economic, financial and social spheres are available from today on the European Statistical Recovery Dashboard of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat).
European Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni said: “To take the right decisions, we need to have objective and timely data at our disposal. That’s why today’s initiative from Eurostat and the other members of the European Statistical System is so important.”
The European Dashboard presents around 20 monthly and quarterly indicators for the EU as a whole and for the individual Member States in a clear and compact manner. The interactive application enables the personalised display and the downloading and processing of the statistical data in line with the open data concept. In addition to the charts it also features brief descriptions of the economic and social situation in the latest period for which data are available.
The European Statistical Recovery Dashboard was initiated by the Federal Statistical Office under the German EU Council Presidency and developed together with Eurostat and the EU Member States. The Germany EU Council Presidency in the field of statistics was based on the lessons learned during the crisis so as to be adequately prepared for similar future situations with a programme coordinated across Europe. This included making the European Statistical System (ESS) resilient. For that purpose, the “Wiesbaden Memorandum“ was developed, a coordinated response to future crises to which all Directors General of the national statistical institutes agreed. More information on the German EU Council Presidency in the field of statistics can be found at www.destatis.de/eu2020.
On 1 January 2021, Portugal will take over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. Yesterday, on 16 December 2020, the baton in the field of statistics was symbolically passed on from the Federal Statistical Office to Statistics Portugal. Germany and Portugal will continue their close collaboration in the next few months during the trio presidency with Croatia.
Today the first version of the European Statistical Recovery Dashboard has been released. It will be updated monthly with the latest data available and supplemented by other relevant indicators in the future. The European Dashboard can be found on the Eurostat website and at www.destatis.de/Europa.
