Press release No. N 083 of 18 December 2018

WIESBADEN – The need to limit contacts to only a few, comply with sanitary measures and look after one another – the measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic have placed strains on daily life. Risk groups, including people in need of long-term care and their relatives, have been hit particularly hard, and not only those living in care homes. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 2.1 million people received care at home from relatives only at the end of 2019, which is more than half of the 4.1 million persons in need of long-term care in Germany (51.3%). As many as 72,700 of them were in the highest care grade (5) with the most severe impairments and special requirements regarding the care they needed.
