WIESBADEN – People working in health occupations are to be given priority in the coronavirus vaccination programme – especially because many of them have a higher risk of getting infected because of their direct contact with patients. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that approximately 3.63 million healthcare personnel in Germany worked in direct patient contact in 2018. There were a total of 5.65 million people employed in healthcare facilities, ranging from medical practices and hospitals to medical laboratories to pharmacies. That was an increase of 73,000, or 1.3%, from the previous year. 76% of them were women.
