Press release No. 030 of 21 January 2021

WIESBADEN – In the first week of January 2021, mobility in Germany fell by 19.1% compared with the average recorded for January in the pre-crisis year of 2019. This was shown by an ad hoc evaluation of experimental data of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). In Week 2, there was a somewhat smaller decrease of 13.6%. The decline was particularly strong for longer distance travel. In the first week of 2021, the number of journeys travelled over distances exceeding 30 kilometres dropped by 36% from January 2019. That trend persisted in Week 2 with a 33% decline for distances of more than 30 kilometres. No major differences could be detected between districts with a 7 day incidence of 200 cases and over and districts with a lower 7 day incidence.
