Press release No. 034 of 26 January 2021

WIESBADEN – The microcensus 2021 has started under special conditions: due to the coronavirus pandemic, respondents are not personally interviewed at their homes in the current official survey of one percent of the population in Germany. Instead, interviews are conducted over the phone, or using the internet or traditional paper questionnaires. A total of roughly 810,000 people in about 370,000 households will be surveyed between January and December. They form a representative part of the total population and will be asked about their school education and studies, training and advanced training, occupation and search for work, income, childcare, internet use and housing circumstances. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) is asking the households, which have been selected at random, for their support also in the current situation.

A short video (only in german) on the website of the Federal Statistical Office explains what the microcensus is, why it is caried out, how the households are randomly selected, why they have to participate and what is done with their answers. The video is available also in Arabic, English, Polish, Russian and Turkish. For more information on the microcensus and answers to frequently asked questions please refer to www.mikrozensus.de
