Press release No. 062 of 11 February 2021
WIESBADEN – In 2020, roughly 116,700 businesses were started in Germany whose legal form and number of employees suggest that they have greater economic importance. Based on provisional figures, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decrease of 4.5% compared with 2019. The downward trend observed in business registrations of larger businesses has continued in the previous three years. However, the relevant development even accelerated due to the coronavirus crisis. The number of businesses started was down 0.1% in 2019 and 2.2% in 2018, each compared with the previous year.
