WIESBADEN – In 2020, 2,724 people died in road traffic accidents in Germany. Based on provisional figures, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decline of 322, or 10.6%, on 2019 (3,046 fatalities). The number of traffic accident fatalities was the lowest since these statistics had first been compiled more than 60 years ago. The number of persons injured also declined in 2020, by 14.7% to roughly 328,000, compared with a year earlier.
This is especially due to the fact that, because of the coronavirus pandemic, people travelled far less kilometres on German roads in 2020 compared with the previous year.
