WIESBADEN – Schedules with alternating home and in-class education, distance learning and longer vacations – for pupils the year 2020 was very different from any school year before. There still is disagreement about how to catch up on all the lessons that were not taught. One of the options discussed is repeating the year voluntarily. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that roughly 143,600 pupils at schools of general education repeated the grade in the school year of 2019/2020 either voluntarily or because they were not promoted to the next grade in summer 2019. There are differences between the sexes. 60% of the children who repeated the year were male and 40% female.
