WIESBADEN – In 2020 roughly 12.9 billion eggs were produced in holdings in Germany which had at least 3,000 places for laying hens. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a year-on-year increase of 3.4%. The largest growth in 2020 was recorded in organic and in free-range egg production. Organic egg production has become increasingly important over the years. Compared with 2019, organic egg production increased again, by 8.1% to 1.6 billion eggs. The number of laying hens in organic farming increased by almost 440,000 to 5.3 million (+6.8%) on an annual average.
