Press release No. 190 of 15 April 2021
WIESBADEN – German local courts reported 1,108 business insolvency requests in January 2021. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that this was a decline of 31.1% compared with January 2020. This means that the economic problems of many businesses due to the coronavirus crisis were not yet reflected by an increase in reported business insolvencies. One reason is that the obligation to file for insolvency was suspended until 31 December 2020 for overindebted businesses. Insolvent businesses have been obliged to file for insolvency since October 2020, but the effects are not yet visible in the January 2021 figures because, for instance, courts need time to handle the requests. The obligation to file for insolvency continues to be suspended for businesses still awaiting payment of government financial support provided for since 1 November 2020.
Basic data and long time series are available in tables Insolvencies (52411) in the GENESIS-Online database.
