Turnover in accommodation and food services, February 2021 (provisional results)

WIESBADEN - In February 2021, the calendar and seasonally adjusted turnover in accommodation and food services increased by a real (price adjusted) 1.2% and a nominal (not price adjusted) 1.6% compared with January 2021. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that turnover on a real basis (calendar and seasonally adjusted) was however 67.9% below the level recorded in February 2020, the month before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in Germany.
This year-on-year comparison shows clearly the effects of the continued closures of hotels and restaurants. Without calendar and seasonal adjustment, turnover in accommodation and food services in February 2021 was down by 68.8% in real terms and by 67.7% in nominal terms compared with February 2020. The turnover of hotels and other accommodation establishments was 81.9% (in real terms) lower than in February 2020. In food and beverage services, turnover fell by a real 61.7% compared with February 2020. Within food and beverage service activities, the real turnover of caterers in February 2021 declined by 46.2% on the same month of the previous year.
Methodological notes:
The survey of turnover in accommodation and food services is based on the Trade and Services Statistics Act (HdlDlStatG) which entered into force on 22 February 2021. The survey covers accommodation and food services enterprises with a turnover of at least 165,000 euros per year. Destatis takes into account late notifications from the enterprises surveyed and continuously updates the initially confirmed results.
The revision tables provide information on how the updates affect the results.
The results of accommodation and food services statistics may differ from those of tourism statistics, especially in the summer months, because turnover in accommodation establishments does not always correspond to the dates of overnight stays. Methodological differences may also lead to different results.
