WIESBADEN – The tourism industry is one of the many sectors heavily affected by the measures taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Many people are looking for ways to have holidays despite the travel restrictions - and rely on camping sites. Unlike most of the other types of accommodation, German camping sites were in higher demand in the summer half-year of 2020 (period from May to October in tourism statistics) compared with the same period a year earlier. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of overnight stays of domestic visitors amounted to roughly 31 million between May and October 2020. This was an increase of 15% compared with the same period of the preceding year.
