Press Night-time mobility going down 12 percentage points more with curfew imposed than without

Ad hoc evaluation of mobile network data shows effect of ‘federal emergency brake’ on mobility between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Press release No. 215 of 6 May 2021

WIESBADEN – The 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew introduced by the ‘federal emergency brake’ in towns and districts with a high 7-day incidence has an impact on the night-time mobility of the population in Germany. From 24 April to 1 May 2021, night-time mobility went down 12 percentage points more, on average, in towns and districts under curfew than in those not under curfew compared with the reference values of the pre-crisis year of 2019. This is shown by an ad-hoc evaluation of experimental data carried out by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) to represent recent mobility changes during the coronavirus pandemic.
