Press release No. 248 of 26 May 2021
• Substantially less naturalisations of Britons after the Brexit
• Decline also due to the coronavirus pandemic
• Increasing number of naturalisations of Syrian citizens
WIESBADEN – In 2020, roughly 109,900 foreigners became naturalised German citizens. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that this was a decline of 19,000 naturalisations, or 15%, compared with 2019. More than half of the decline was attributable to reduced naturalisations of Britons. In 2020, only 4,900 British citizens were naturalised. These were 9,700, or almost two thirds (-66%), less than in 2019 when an all-time high was reached in naturalisations of Britons.
