WIESBADEN – In 2020, unemployment was the main cause of overindebtedness for almost one in five overindebted people (19.7%) who sought support from a debt advice centre. Sickness, addiction or an accident were indicated as the second most frequent cause of overindebtedness (16.5%). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that 588,000 people sought help from debt or insolvency advice centres because of financial problems. In 2019, the figure was slightly over 582,000 people.
