Press release No. 263 of 7 June 2021
WIESBADEN – Nearly as many women as men sought the help of debt or insolvency advice centres in 2020. A total of 588,000 people sought advice, 273,000 of them were women (46.4%) and 315,000 men (53.6%). To mark the Debt Counselling Awareness Week 2021, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that there are considerable differences depending on the household or family situation. 13.8% of those who received advice were sole mothers, who accounted for only 5.2% of the total population. The proportion of overindebted men living alone was also above average: they accounted for 29.9% of the people supported by debt advice centres while their share of the total population was only 19.5%.
Basic data and long time series are available in tables "Statistics on overindebtedness (63511)" in the GENESIS-Online database.
