Press Child protection: youth welfare offices took roughly 45,400 children into care in 2020

• Authorities registered roughly 8% fewer cases than in the previous year
• One in three children younger than 12 years
• Overburdening, abuse and neglect becoming more important

WIESBADEN – In 2020, the youth welfare offices in Germany took roughly 45,400 children and young people temporarily into care to protect them. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that acute child endangerment accounted for two thirds (67%) of these cases, unaccompanied entry from abroad for 17%, and requests of the minors concerned for another 17%. One third (33%) of all boys and girls taken into care in 2020 were younger than 12 years, one in ten children (11%) even younger than 3 years.
